A former paper mill & brownfield site that is being developed to create 178 affordable homes. On the 6th July 1936, the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal which runs through the middle of the development site breached its banks, the water from the canal rushed over the sheer 100ft drop into the river Irwell below and the site has remained untouched ever since.
The 5-week programme, working across challenging terrain and steep, unstable ledges required strategic planning and the assessment of risk by our Mech Arb contracts manager Josh Calvert. In order to implement safe systems of work.
Approximately 500 tons of material had to be felled and extracted from the site. Operations included excavator-based removal of several hundred trees. Use of a forestry forwarder to extract material to the processing area. Technical winching operations.
A self-propelled woodchipper alongside tractors and trailers to remove the material as access prohibited walking floor trailers. As well as arborist teams using rope and harness techniques to systematically clear the breech of trees and vegetation.
The project was completed successfully, safely and on time. We are looking forward to Phase 2.
